As a weekend sportsman who spends most of his free time out on the shooting range, I have noticed that there are three kinds of air rifle shooting in South Africa at the moment:
1. Family fun can shooting
2. Field target shooting
3. Olympic air rifle shooting
Family fun can shooting is usually done with a spring-powered air gun bought from a mall shop. This is the entry level where one of the parents decides to enter the sport. All that is needed is a safe area or shooting range where makeshift targets can be put up. A lot of care is needed to make sure the area is really safe because although this is usually a social sport where alcohol should never be enjoyed, it often is. Targets are generally large cans or bottles and no score is usually kept. Mall air guns are less accurate than gas powered rifles.
Secondly we have field target shooting. This is really a great sport. Shooting is done at a range of ten to fifty meters. The targets are lifelike - usually small steel animals and birds. The range of events you can do depends on your shooting club. Wind and weather are a constant consideration during field shooting. You need a good gas air rifle. Spring rifles aren’t used much because they cause problems with scopes and scope mounts. Targets are staggered at different distances and the shooter constantly changes his scope’s settings for the change in distance.
Lastly we have Olympic 10 meter air rifle shooting. For this sport you need a top of the range 100% accurate air rifle. The air rifle shooting range is an indoor shooting range where everything is done in a controlled environment and must be at a specific height and distance. The marksman may not use anything to help his or her rifle or body to make the shot. This is a sport for the disciplined sports person, not for the social shooter.
